At 15p a litre, home-brew biodiesel is fuel of the future
Drivers spurn forecourt for the pub restaurant when they need to fill their tanks
From the page: "Every few weeks Gordon Elliott drives 22 miles to the Hare and Hounds pub in Marple, Cheshire, collects a barrel of waste cooking oil from his stepdaughter and takes it back to his personal oil refinery in his garage in Leigh, near Bolton. The retired construction site manager then decants the liquid into a machine and adds a few chemicals.
Twenty-four hours later the waste oil has been purified, filtered and refined and is ready to be used in one of his family's two diesel cars. Instead of paying £1.25p a litre at the local supermarket, he has paid 15p to make his own biodiesel. He says he is saving nearly £100 a month - as well as 90% of the greenhouse gases he would normally emit from driving. The cars perform perfectly, the equipment will be paid for within a year and the pleasure of making his own fuel is intense. "It's the principle. I do it for the environment and to spite the exchequer," he said."
This is very good news in deed. And will remain so, till the government intrudes. It hates any activity that earns a shilling it can't get half of. In any event, there is potential business in this. For example, it is estimated that 50.000 tonnes of waste oil finds its way into the Adriatic - in Croatia. Then there's the waste oil from innumerable restaurants and booths. These oils could be reclaimed and used.
This is not my original idea. There is, in my opinion, an Einstein of biofuels and waste recycling, that resides in Zagreb, Croatia with a full blown plan for doing this and more. I've read it; brilliant. And his planned operational facility would be nearly 100% self-sufficient. The last we spoke, he was seeking investment.
This same gentleman had a land reclamation project that, when the Americans saw it, thought it was brilliant, good enough to implement in the U.S. He acquired investment on this project.

I just finished a long discussion this evening with a neighbour touching on this theme among others that complement it. The discussion was stout and energetic. We concluded nothing among ourselves but an amiable 'good night'. Returning home, I see this article stumbled and out of curiosity read it. 'Ah!', I think, 'how apropo!'
From the page: "In recent years, media has increasingly turned away from reporting what has happened to focus on speculation about what may happen in the future. Paying attention to modern media is thus a waste of time."
A highly recommended read.

Face it, Democrats: Barack Obama's got a growing problem with whites
From the page: "The facts are stubborn, however. Since his phenomenal win with 33% of the white vote in nearly all-white Iowa, Obama has been unable to get a firm grip on white Democrats. He has won a majority of these voters in only six states, the biggest of which is his home state of Illinois. Clinton has defeated Obama among white voters in key states such as California, Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Exit polls show Clinton winning an overwhelming average of 57% of white Democrats since the February Super Tuesday elections.
If you think none of this is a real issue for Democrats as they try to win the White House, then listen to Republican guru Karl Rove. Citing Obama's inability to get more than 30% of Catholics or working-class white voters in a big state such as Pennsylvania, Rove recently wrote: "Defections like this elect Republicans."
And now we are heading into a general election with an even larger group of white voters in play, key independents and suburbanites in "toss-up" districts that swing between Republicans and Democrats.
So it is critical for the Democrats to focus on what it means to nominate this particular black candidate. It is critical for them to honestly assess his strengths and weaknesses, even when those are uncomfortably intertwined with his race.
In particular, being silent on race is not going to erase Obama's ties to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and the preacher's fireballs of inflammatory rhetoric."
This article implicitly suggests that the Democratic Party should not give B.O. the nomination, if I read this correctly. Frankly, I don't see how the numbers could possibly work for B.O. in the general election. B.O. has marginally beaten H.C. He had help with scandalous Republican primary crosovers. In any event, there's a long list I will forego reviewing. Time will tell.

Climate change will boost farm output
AUSTRALIAN agricultural output will double over the next 40 years, with climate change predicted to increase, rather than hinder, the level of production.
From the page: "In fact, Mr Keogh says, if global warming does occur, some areas such as southeast Queensland will receive more rain, and as a result will greatly benefit. Recent research has shown increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere lifts plant production by up to 30 per cent in a phenomenon known as carbon fertilisation."
Which ever the discussion goes on Climate Change, there's continual news that is good as well as bad. This article is on the side of good news. Read the whole article to be sure.

I remember my first visit to Pula.
It was drizzling, cold, and a wind so strong you had to fold into it to walk.
This wind is called a bura.
The ancient Roman coliseum there was imposing on that bleak, gray day;
a stoney, imperial statement of unshakable presence in every blast of wind.

Russia's state hackers target Radio Free Europe in Prague
`Tsunami' of attacks interrupts station's broadcastsFrom Gabriel Ronay In Budapest broadcasts
From the page: "RUSSIA'S STATE-LICENSED hacker forces have opened a new front in the east-west cyber war with an unprecedented mass cyber-attack on Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the American-financed radio station broadcasting from Prague to Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
The attack began last weekend with a "tsunami" of bogus connection requests, which blocked some of the radio station's internet websites and caused many others to crash. In turn, this frontal cyber-attack also affected the radio's broadcast services to some 20 countries in the region. When RFE took electronic counter-measures the cyber-attacks intensified.
Significantly, Prague sources point out, RFE/RL's broadcasts to Belorussia, Russia, Iran, Bosnia and Kosovo were the target services quickly rendered inaccessible. A further tranche of disabled services include Azerbaijan and Tadjikistan, which have friendly links with the West but, in the eyes of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's policy-makers, belong to Russia's sphere of influence.
Cyber-assaults and hacker raids are virtual arms, but, in effect, they are real offensive weapons. Cyber-attacks can harm or even paralyse a country and are therefore the equivalents of physical military attacks. Nato's defensive treaty, drawn up in 1949, does not deal with this new-fangled weapon as there was no internet and very few computers at the time."

From the page: "But for the woman formerly known to the world as simply "A.J.," her memory is so powerful that it dominates her life. She sat down with ABC News' Diane Sawyer recently to reveal herself publicly in the hopes that others with unusual memories like hers will come forward and be studied.
In her first television interview, 42-year-old Jill Price told Sawyer, "I am in the moment, but I also have, like this split screen in my head. I always explain it to people like I'm walking around with a video camera on my shoulder. And every day is a videotape. So if you throw a date out at me, it's as if I pulled a videotape out, put in a VCR and just watched the day. As it happened. From my point of view.
"I walk around with my life right next to me," she said."

Wilderness bill would limit Border Patrol
From the page: " Zack Taylor, who is a former Border Patrol agent, says a bill being proposed by a member of the Congressional Hispanic caucus would make it very difficult for law enforcement agents to operate in areas along the U.S.-Mexico border where illegal immigration and drug smuggling is rampant.
H.R. 2593 is called the Borderlands Conservation and Security Act of 2007. Sponsored by Representative Democrat Raul Grijalva (D-Arizona), it would create new public lands wilderness areas along the southern border, especially in Arizona -- which is the largest point of entry for illegal immigration and drug-smuggling traffic in the United States.
Zack Taylor is a member of the National Association of Former Border Patrol Agents. "It would prevent the building or maintenance of a fence. It would restrict law enforcement access to those lands. And it would facilitate drug smuggling and alien smuggling in those areas," he laments."
Interesting man, Representative Democrat Raul Grijalva of Arizona.

Ex-manager says OJ Simpson confessed
Mike Gilbert said Simpson had smoked pot, took a sleeping pill and was drinking beer when he confided at his Brentwood home weeks after his trial what happened the night of June 12, 1994. (AP Photo/Sam Mircovich, Pool)
From the page: "A memorabilia dealer who profited from O.J. Simpson for many years is the latest former crony to write a tell-all book, this one alleging a groggy Simpson, high on marijuana, confessed to killing his ex-wife after he was acquitted.
Mike Gilbert also claims he helped his former friend wiggle out of the murder charges by suggesting how to bloat his hands so they wouldn't fit the notorious bloody gloves.
Gilbert's book, "How I Helped O.J. Get Away With Murder: The Shocking Inside Story of Violence, Loyalty, Regret and Remorse" (Regnery Publishing, 232 pages, $27.95), is due in stores Monday. It was released to The Associated Press in advance.
He said Simpson had smoked pot, took a sleeping pill and was drinking beer when he confided at his Brentwood home weeks after his trial what happened the night of June 12, 1994. Simpson said he went to his ex-wife's condominium, but did not bring a knife with him. Simpson told him Nicole Brown Simpson had one in her hand when she opened the door."
Friendliness should have its limits.
